UNUSUAL JOB SEEKING STRATEGIES (1)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Please don't try this if you want the job!
This one has been around for a long time - but there are probably some of you out there who haven't come across it yet...... (I'd love to know what he's doing now!)
This is an actual application someone submitted to a McDonalds fast-food restaurant ....... AND THEY HIRED HIM!
NAME:  XXXX XXXXXXXXX
DESIRED POSITION: Reclining. HA! But seriously, whatever's available.  If I was in a position to be picky, I wouldn't be applying here in the first place.
DESIRED SALARY: $185,000.00 a year plus stock options and a Michael Ovitz style severance package.  If that's not possible, make me an offer and we'll haggle.
EDUCATION: yes
LAST POSITION HELD: Target for middle management hostility
SALARY: less than I'm worth
MOST NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENT: My incredible collection of stolen pens and post-it notes
REASONS FOR LEAVING: it sucked
HOURS AVAILABLE TO WORK: any
PREFERRED HOURS: 1:30 - 3:30 pm Monday, Wednesday and Thursday
DO YOU HAVE ANY SPECIAL SKILLS: yes, but they're better suited to a more intimate environment
MAY WE CONTACT YOU CURRENT EMPLOYER: If I had one, would I be here?
DO YOU HAVE ANY PHYSICAL CONDITIONS THAT WOULD PROHIBIT YOU FROM LIFTING UP TO 50 LBS?
                of what?
DO YOU HAVE A CAR? I think the more appropriate question would be "Do you have a car that runs?"
HAVE YOU RECEIVED ANY SPECIAL AWARDS OR RECOGNITION? I may already be a winner of the Publishers Clearinghouse Sweepstakes
DO YOU SMOKE? only when set on fire
WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE DOING IN 5 YEARS? Living in the Bahamas with a fabulously wealthy super moder, who thinks I'm the greatest thing since sliced bread.  Actually, I'd like to be doing that now.
DO YOU CERTIFY THAT THE ABOVE IS TRUE AND COMPLETE TO THE BEST OF YOUR KNOWLEDGE? No, but I date you to prove otherwise.
Skills Identification - look at a waiter
No one in their right mind would say that being a waiter / waitress / server is an easy job.  But, for family restaurants and the like, prerequisites to the job are relatively few.  Experience preferred, yes, but you don't need a degree, or special training in most cases.  Many high school and college students work in this capacity while getting their education.
Have you ever stopped to think what having been a waiter allows you in all honesty to put on your resume?
Here are a list of skills - and it is undoubtedly incomplete - of a good waiter.
- people skills
- math
- computer use
- attentive
- observant
- multi-tasker
- handling cash
- good manners
- good motor skills - coordinated
- good memory
- business like behavior
- helpful
- honest
- organized
- patient
- communicative
- product knowledge
- energy & stamina
- hospitality
- ability to sell, up sell
- quick thinking
- ability to handle difficult people
- humour
- team player
- able to work in busy, noisy environment
- flexible
- ability to get along with customer and staff
- friendly (but not too friendly - I don't need a new best friend with lunch!)
- slow to anger, not easily offended
........ and the ability to draw a happy face on the back of the  bill, with their name!
Now I'd like you to imagine the waiter has graduated from college and is looking for a job.  What skills from his "waiting" would be good for, say, an entry level management position? or a teacher? or a salesman? or an accountant?
Did you answer "them all"?  Because that's the right answer. ALL these are transferable skills which can be utilized in almost any job.
So before you think you have not many skills - think through all the things you've done, even if you've never been a waiter - and you'll be surprised at how many skills are involved in even the simplest task or job.  And where appropriate, they belong on your resume.
Skills Identification - Just a housewife!
So many women who have been at home for several years feel they have no skills to offer an employer.  Wrong!  Any woman who can manage a household has got strengths and skills galore.  Look at the list below and see which ones you can claim ... and don't be shy about adding others that aren't already in the list.
under construction ....coming shortly..... (so many skills - I had to take a break from typing them all :)
